Despite and ice storm and an empty stadium in Dallas, the University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights won over the SMU Mustangs 17-13. The win for UCF sends the team to their first BCS Bowl game.
The Knights from UCF went 8-0 in their American conference and an impressive 11-1 overall on the 2013 season. Coming into today’s game against SMU, the Knights had already secured a BCS Bowl game, but pride was still on the line.
For the SMU Mustangs, a win today over UCF could have given them a BCS Bowl bid as well, but it was not to be.
The Mustangs dominated on both sides of the ball in the first half, taking a 10-7 lead at the half. However, after getting back on track, the second half saw 10 more points for the Knights and only 3 for the Mustangs.
In the final 2 minutes, the UCF Knights were stopped short on 3rd and goal, and then missed a game icing field goal attempt – giving SMU another chance to win with a touchdown.
Unfortunately for SMU, the Mustangs came up short on their final drive giving the Knights the big win.
Unbelievably, with their #16 ranking, the UCF Knights are now the second best college football team in Florida, behind the Florida State Seminoles, but ahead of the Florida Gators.
