According to United, Boeing has completed the assembly of the first 2 of the 50 787 Dreamliners currently on order for the United Airlines fleet. Next up for the two assembled 787s is configuration of the cabin, installation of engines and painting the exterior.
United is excited about taking delivery of the new aircraft which will enhance the customer’s air travel experience with its larger windows and increased overhead bin space. Other improvements to the passenger cabin of the 787 include enhanced lighting, better pressurization and humidity controls, and other passenger comfort improvements.
United placed the order for the 787 aircraft with Boeing back in 2004, and although it has taken longer than expected to get close to delivery, United is pleased. “…the 787 is a game changing aircraft and worth the wait,” said Fleet VP Ron Baur. “The 787 will give us a competitive advantage since we will be the first U.S. airline to operate it.”
United will take delivery of 5 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in 2012, which will help their bottom line as an estimated 20% more fuel efficient aircraft. The routes planned for the first of the 787s have not been finalized yet, but flight and cabin crew members are already going through training for the new aircraft at the company’s training centers in Houston, TX.
