Verizon Wireless Gets Indirect Assistance Vs. AT&T Merger with T-Mobile

While the AT&T Merger with wireless carrier T-Mobile might provide a threat to Verizon wireless, the company got a bit of protection against its rivals from an unlikely source, the U.S. Justice Department.

The U.S. DOJ announced that it is filing a law suit to block the purchase of T-Mobile by AT&T. The $39 billion meger could create some tough competition for Verizon. The wireless carrier recently added the iPhone to its network and has boasted strong financial performance due to its high levels of service and good user reviews.

AT&T meanwhile has struggled and would likely not be in its current position without the multi-year exclusivity which it had with Apple for the iPhone until recently. The acquisition would create the world’s largest wireless carrier.

According to the suit, Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole said that the acquisition “would result in tens of millions of consumers all across the United States facing higher prices, fewer choices and lower quality products for mobile wireless services.”
