The airliner was carrying 231 people when the emergency landing was made. Pilots for the airline circled near the airport for about an hour trying to fix the problem with the landing gear.
After being unsuccessful in their attempts to get the landing gear to come down, the crew dumped much of their remaining fuel prior to attempting the crash landing. While there were some sparks and some small fires after touchdown, they were quickly addressed by ground personnel and no one was injured.
Taking no chances, the fire department had put down a layer of flame-retardant foam on the runway before the plane landed. This step, in addition to a perfect gear up approach and landing by the crew, was responsible for the very positive outcome.
Poland’s President Bronislaw Komorowski congratulated and thanked the crew for their successful landing.
