It’s literally a classic event of outdoor winter NHL ice hockey and a New Years Day tradition, as the Toronto Maple Leafs face-off against the Detroit Red Wings on the open ice of the 2013 NHL Winter Classic.
NBC is airing the game on television, and through their online video stream, hockey fans can watch the winter classic online via the free video stream from NBCLiveExtra. The NBC Live Extra – a dedicated web portal on the NBC sports web site featuring live online video of a variety of sports.
To get the free access to watch the 2014 Winter Classic online, viewers can do so using the NBC sports extra site, or the downloadable apps. This enables hockey fans to watch the game on their smartphones, tablets, or laptop computers.
The NHL has been playing at least one game outdoors every year since 2008, and this year has upped the ante to 6 outdoor games.
Despite the snowy conditions, today’s game reportedly sold 105,500 for fans to watch the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium. This is roughly twice the number of tickets sold on average as the first 5 Winter Classics.
