Windows Phone 7

Microsoft is facing an uphill battle in its competition with Apple and Google in the smart phone market. Just a few months after its release, Microsoft has announced that they have shipped about 1.5 million of its new Windows Phone 7.

Apple clearly dominates the space with its iPhones. According to reports, Apple has sold just over 31 million of the latest version of its hand held device, the iPhone 4. Supporting users of the Apple platform are and estimated 300,000 apps. This is followed closely by the 200,000 apps available for the Google Android.

In its short time in release, the Windows Phone 7 has about the same number of apps available at those available for the Palm WebOS and about 30% of those available to Blackberry users. Analysists predict that this number will continue to grow and that Microsoft has a good chance of making the top 3, along with Apple and Google, over the next several years. Windows is relying on the popularity of its .net framework among developers to help them stay competitive. It has served them well in the PC world and it the backbone of the phone as well.
