Algerian Air Force Aircraft Crash Claims 257 Lives

Ilyushin-IL-76-algerian-air-force-crashWhile the details are still coming in, it was reported from the Algerian Ministry of Defense that 257 people, including 10 crew members perished in the crash of an Ilyushin IL-76 transport aircraft on Wednesday this week.

The Algerian Air Force plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Boufarik military airport on April 11, 2018.

The airport near Algiers, was the departure point for the military aircraft for a planned flight to Bechar.


In addition to the 10 crew members, most of the 247 passengers were reportedly personnel of the Algerian People’s National Armed Forces or member of their families While early reports indicated a death toll of 105, the later report from official sources at the Ministry of Defense upped the number to 257 indicating that there were no survivors.

According to recorded data there have been 79 other crashes involving the Russian built Ilyushin IL-76 airlifter since 1971.
