AT&T Announces Plans to Bring 5000 Jobs Back to the United States as Part of T-Mobile Merger

While AT&T is currently under fire and facing a potential law suit from the U.S. Department of Justice over the proposed acquisition of wireless carrier T-Mobile, the company tried to put a positive spin on the planned merger.

According to the company, if the merger is successful, AT&T would bring 5000 call-center job back to the United States. The repatriation of the jobs currently outsourced to overseas companies appears to be an attempt to help persuade FCC regulators and the public that the merger will have a positive impact on the economy and consumers.

In a statement, AT&T chairman and chief executive Randall Stephenson said, “At a time when many Americans are struggling and our economy faces significant challenges, we’re pleased that the T-Mobile merger allows us to bring 5,000 jobs back to the United States and significantly increase our investment here.”

The statement from AT&T was received very well by workers and their union chief. Larry Cohen, president of the Communications Workers of America union was quoted saying, “Cuts in wages, benefits and jobs have become the new normal in America, so that when a company like AT&T takes action to bring back quality jobs, it’s big news.”

It is still to early to see if the olive branch from AT&T will do anything to help the deal go through, or have any impact on the current DOJ plans to move forward with the law suit against the communications giant.
