Auto Industry and Movie Trailers Dominate Super Bowl Ads

2011 Super Bowl

The Super Bowl Ads for 2011 featured some familiar advertisers such as Budweiser and GoDaddy, who have become regulars over the years. The two industries which appeared to have the most advertisements during the breaks in this year’s big game were the auto makers and Hollywood.

Several blockbuster films scheduled for release in the summer spent their $3 million for thirty second trailers as much as 6 months prior to their anticipated release dates. The Transformers will be back at the start of the summer with the third film in the series. Apparently keeping space aliens, super humans, and epic battles a common theme this summer, some of the 15 total films trailers making their debut were, Aliens & Cowboys, Super 8, Thor and Captain America.

Car maker Volkswagon received some of the highest marks from parents for its ad featuring a small boy in a Darth Vader costume trying desperately to invoke the Force, on everything around the house, to no avail. In the end, with a little help from his dad and the remote start feature on his Volkswagon, the young Sith Lord is stunned when he finally manages to use his powers to start the vehicle. Several other manufacturers also spent the big bucks to toot their respective horns including, Audi, Chrysler, Kia, Ford and Hyundai to name a few.

Perhaps the biggest spender among the car makers was GM. Not only did they run several ads for the new Chevy Volt, and give away a Chevy Camero convertible to the game’s MVP Aaron Rodgers, the company also sponsored the post game show and trophy ceremony.
