Today in Germany, the FIFA World Cup for women’s soccer gets underway. The tournament starts with a match between Nigeria and France at 8:45 a.m. Eastern Time.

The event, which will feature championship soccer matches between 16 teams from around the world, will be broadcast on ESPN2 for television viewers in the United States.
One of the commentators for the tournament will be Brandi Chastain, who was a leader on the U.S. Women’s soccer team which won the world cup in 1999 in the final championship match against China.

In a related event, the men’s USA Soccer team lost in the gold cup game against Mexico by a score of 4-2. This was a big win for Mexico, who was down by a score of 2-0 early in the match, only to come back and win with four unanswered goals.

The win crowns Mexico as the champion of the North American, Central American and Caribbean region. The win is seen as a warm up to the men’s World Cup in 2014. Prior to World Cup, the soccer team from Mexico will have another warm up as they take part in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.

For the women, while the US team is ranked as a strong contender, Germany is currently the favorite to win the 2011 world cup.
