Free christmas ecards are growing in popularity.

Christmas is less than a week away and for those who still haven’t dropped a Christmas card in the mail, one popular option to be sure your holiday greeting arrives in time is to send an e-card. The popularity of online electronic greeting cards for holidays and Christmas has continued to grow over the years.

Sending a free christmas e-card online is a great way to send holiday and New Years wishes to more friends than you would with paper because it is cheaper and easier. Many even like that fact that many online e-card sites are free and allow you to customize the message.

According to recent reports the number of people now using online greeting cards as well as sending messages through social media sites is having a dramatic impact on the U.S. Postal Service. The number of packages, letters and holiday cards mailed thought the Postal Service is down by over a billion for 2011 compared to 2010. Despite the reduction, the Post Office still expects to handle some 16.5 billion deliveries.

The growing trend for e-cards to send a Christmas, New Year’s and other holiday greeting has also had an impact on the greeting card industry. Sales are down nearly 50% from levels 10 years ago, now at about 1.5 billion.

To keep up, many in the industry are also finding ways to integrate their paper cards with technology to make them more interactive and appealing. Also, many paper card producers also offer free electronic greeting cards online and earn revenue through advertising on their web site.
