With and opening weekend earnings of $155 million, the film “The Hunger Games” has set a record as the best earnings for and opening weekend for a film which is not a sequel, and also the third largest weekend take for a film ever.

Based on a popular book, Hunger Games look poised to have a run of financial success akin to many other book-to-movie hits like the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises. Including the international earnings outside of the U.S. and Canadian markets, the total take for the opening weekend of the film was a reported $214 million.
