IRS.gov and Partner Sites make it Easier and Free to File and Track Tax Returns OnlineWho says filing income taxes is complicated? Through its partnership with a number of online and walk-in tax services, the IRS has made filing taxes online free and easy for millions. Wondering when to file taxes with the IRS? The agency is accepting applications online through its freefile e-filing service now.

To help Americans with filing their federal income taxes, the IRS.gov web site provides free online access to the Free File Alliance, a nonprofit coalition of 15 industry-leading tax software companies which help low- and middle-income Americans prepare, complete and e-file their federal tax returns online.

The free tax service is also available in Spanish, and through a partnership with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), is also available in person for walk-in customers. VITA is a walk-in service for low-to-moderate income taxpayers providing assistance through Free File software on self-assist kiosks. The free in person tax filing assistance is available in in 29 states and provides tax filing help for taxpayers who do not have Internet access at home, as well as those who want to e-file, but need additional help.

Through the Free File program an estimated 70% of Americans will be able to file their income taxes for free online. The free service is available to anyone filing their 2012 tax returns with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $57,000 or less.

Additionally, for those with incomes greater than $57,000, the Free File also offers basic federal e-filing services with no income limitations. This basic e-filing service, called Free File Fillable Forms, allows taxpayers who are familiar with tax law and need no preparation assistance to complete and file their federal income tax electronically.

The major benefit to filing taxes online electronically, it the ability to easily track the status of your tax return online. Additionally, e-filing your taxes online also helps to speed the delivery of any tax refund that you may be expecting.
