After a winter of record snow and a spring loaded with rain storms and tornados, the weather may be in the news again this week as rain and thunderstorms could have an impact on the Kentucky Derby. The forecast for the race it about 75 degrees with a chance of rain and thunderstorms.

The 2011 Kentucky Derby this Saturday afternoon will be the 137th “Run for the Roses”. The cances for a muddy track may have a big impact on this years winner as well as the chances for a Triple Crown winner this year. The Derby is the first leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and is followed by the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

It has been 33 years since the last time a single horse won all three of the races which make up the Triple Crown in a single year. The last time it all came together for a single horse was in 1978 when Affirmed edged out Alydar, literally by a nose, at Belmont to complete the Crown.

The top five contenders in this years Kentucky Derby, according to the official Kentucky Derby web site (www.kentuckyderby.com) are: Dialed In, Uncle Mo, Archarcharch, Toby’s Corner and Soldat.
