Kmart’s 2013 Black Friday Sale Announcement Drives Online Backlash

Kmart's 2013 Black Friday Sale Announcement Drives Online BacklashToday, retail giant Kmart announced that for its 2013 Black Friday sale, the company plans to open at 6am on Thanksgiving Day and remain open for 41 hours. This is part of the company’s 2013 Black Friday discount and deal ad plan.

In what is being described as the most greed-driven and deplorable act of callus treatment of employees on a day which is supposed to be all about family gatherings, the company is driving massive amounts of negative press and comments from consumers online.

NPR is reporting that many online are referring to the Kmart as a “Grinch” for its decision to take employees away from their families on Thanksgiving just so the company can try to make more money.

“Everybody thinks your executives are horrible people,” a man named Christopher Sweet wrote on Kmart’s Facebook page. Another critic, Ted Talevski, appealed to the workers: “This is a message to all Kmart employees! Do not go to work on Thanksgiving Day!”

Although Kmart has indicated that it plans to use seasonal workers during the black Friday sales event in order to allow regular employees to be home with family, it has not slowed the criticism and backlash from the public online.

While this is not the first time that Kmart has been open on Thanksgiving, it is the firt time that they have not closed in time for employees to get home for a Thanksgiving dinner with family. The last 3 years the company has been open from 6am to 4pm.
