When teenager Trayvon Martin was shot a few weeks ago by George Zimmerman in Sanford Florida it was a hot topic on local news for central Florida. As more details have come to the surface, including calls from Martin to his girlfriend and 911 calls from the night of the shooting, the Trayvon Martin shooting has become a national story captivating national media and topping internet searches on major search engines.

There was much local outcry just after the Trayvon Martin shooting as many in the Sanford FL community, just outside of Orlando, could not understand why the man who shot Martin was not arrested, and why recordings of 911 calls from the night were not being released.

Martin was shot by George Zimmerman, a resident of a gated community in the area and a street captain for the community’s neighborhood watch program. According to reports, the community had been subject to several break-ins in recently, and Zimmerman had made numerous calls to 911 in recent months while keeping watch over his community.

On the night in question, Martin had taken a break from watching a basketball game and walked to a local store to buy some snacks. During his walk home, Zimmerman noticed Martin and, felling suspicious about the youth, called 911 and began to follow Trayvon.

What happened next was somewhat unclear until recent 911 calls were released and most recently, Trayvon Martin’s girlfriend stepped forward reporting that Trayvon called her just prior to his death to say that he was scared because someone was following him. Recent reports indicate that Martin was running away from Zimmerman who, despite being told by a 911 operator to stop pursuit, continued to chase after Martin.

In one 911 call, Martin appears to be heard yelling for help before a gun shot is heard which ended his life.

As of yet, Zimmerman has not been arrested while police continue their investigation. Citizens and family of Martin in the area are urging officials to place Zimmerman in custody while the matter is investigated.
