According to Department of Justice estimates, about 20 percent of the population experiences some type of sexual assault during their life. Accordingly, the month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign for this year is “It’s time … to get involved”, which aims to get more of the population involved in various aspects and behaviors which can lead to prevention.

The campaign, which analyzes typical day-to-day behaviors, explains to individuals easy ways in which they can intervene when they are witness to inappropriate behaviors.

The month long campaign is sponsored by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC). Founded in 2000, the aim of the organization is to “identify, develop and disseminate resources regarding all aspects of sexual violence prevention and intervention.”

Tuesday, April 5 is highlighted as the “Day of Action” by the NSVRC and is expected to draw attention to nationally coordinated events. The events, it is hoped, will raise public awareness about sexual violence and will show the public a variety of methods that can be used to aid in preventing it from occurring.
