New Green Card Lottery being Held due to Computer Error

For thousand of immigrants, the replacement lottery for green card applicants is a blessing and a second chance. For thousands of others it is something of a disappointment.

The issue arose when a computer error had, “unfairly” according to the judge, favored previous green card applicants over new applicants when randomly picking green card lottery winners. As a result the original 22,000 applicants who had been approved for a green card had their status rescinded.

Although the group filed suit to overturn the decision, the judge ruled that, because the group had been favored, the selections were not “random” and therefore he ruled that a new lottery would need to be held.

As a result of the ruling, thousands of immigrants are now getting a second chance as the new green card lottery takes place today. The visa lottery is open to practically everyone who passes background checks, has a high school education and does not come from a country like Mexico or India that contributes large numbers of immigrants to the
