Paul Ryan Named Running Mate for Mitt Romney’s Presidential Campaign

Paul Ryan Named Running Mate for Mitt Romney’s Presidential CampaignNumerous sources are now reporting that around 9AM Saturday, Presidential candidate Mitt Romney will announce that his choice for the Vice President and running mate in the campaign will be Representative Paul Ryan. Romney is expected to announce Ryan on the GOP ticket today at the U.S.S. Wisconsin in Norfolk, VA.

In an interview with NBC on Thursday, Romney said he was looking for someone with “a strength of character” and “a vision for the country that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country.”

The 42 year-old Paul Ryan is the chairman of the House Budget Committee. One of his most well-known items while serving in congress since 1999 has been his lead of a plan to overhaul Medicare and Medicade. According to Ryan’s plan, Medicare would be run by private insurers instead of the Government, and Medicaid would become the responsibility of the individual states.

The Obama administration has been highly critical of Ryan’s plan for Medicare ad its impact on Seniors. According to the president Ryan’s plan amounts to “thinly veiled social Darwinism.”

Conservatives seem to like the Romney – Ryan GOP presidential ticket. They see Ryan’s strength as his tight fisted approach on budget and spending controls as just what the Romney camp needs with so much attention focused on the economy.

According to the Wall Street Journal editorial page, “More than any other politician, the House Budget Chairman has defined those stakes well as a generational choice about the role of government and whether America will once again become a growth economy or sink into interest-group dominated decline,” the Journal editorial said.

After Norfolk, Virginia today, the Romney campaign is expected to begin a bus tour of some key swing states for the election. The other states on the agenda after Romney announces Ryan include North Carolina, Florida and Ohio.
