Summer Infant Inc. baby monitors recalled

On Friday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall on video baby monitors manufactured by Summer Infant Inc. The recall covers about 1.7 million of the monitors which have been deemed a choking and strangulation hazard.

Last March a 10-month old baby girl died when the cord from her monitor became wrapped around her neck. Eight months later a second child, a 6-month old, also died as a result of strangulation by the monitor cord which was close to the baby’s changing table.

In total there have been seven reported infant deaths linked to cord strangulation from baby monitors in the last seven years. Manufacturers, including Summer Infant Inc., warn parents not to leave infants within three feet of the monitor cords.

Under terms of the voluntary recall, the company will add additional warning labels to the products in hopes of better clarifying the potential risks.
