Fresh of the heels of her win at Wimbledon, which completed her 14th Grand Slam in Tennis, Serena Williams became the second women in history to make the Grand Slam into a Golden Slam with a gold medal win in the women’s single championship at the London Olympics today. In a match lasting not much more than an hour, Serena Williams absolutely dominated Maria Sharapova with a 6-0, 6-1 finish.
Not only did Williams make history by being only the second women to add gold to her grand slam, the gold medal match was also the most lopsided women’s final in Olympic history.
The first woman to complete a Golden Slam was Steffi Graf in the 1988 games in Seoul Korea. With her win today added to her 14 Grand Slam singles championships, Williams now has the most Grand Slams of any active woman.
Serena is scheduled to also compete alongside her sister Venus Williams later today. One of the great duos in tennis, the pair will be going after their third Olympic gold medal in doubles tennis.
Williams closed out her win in somewhat poetic fashion with ace number 60 for the tournament, and one of many during the match with Sharapova. The exclamation mark on the match was a loud and long scream by Williams following the ace that secured the win for gold. So excited with the win Williams was virtually speechless during the on court interview immediately following the match.
