Skype Downloading and Service Outage Reported

Reports on the internet, and on Skype’s Twitter feed, have indicated that for many users the Skype network, and the servers used by new users to download Skype to their computers, has gone down.

Skype is a free service used by millions to make voice over IP calls, as well as video and chat communications. The service is very popular because it allows people to connect to each other from anywhere in the world through the internet. For a fee, the service even allows users to make calls from their computer to a telephone, thus avoiding international or other long distance fees.

In addition to computers, with the growing popularity of mobile web enabled handheld devices, Skype has also become a popular mobile application. The reported outage today does not appear to have affected mobile device users of users of Macs. The service interruption appears to only be affecting PC users at this time. The outage could have very easily made people think they needed to seek the assistance of someone who has training in computer repair.

The reports vary somewhat from users who reported difficulty connecting to the service or downloading software, to include other users who have reported the Skype application crashing.

According to the Twitter feed from Skype, the company is already aware of the service problems and is working to resolve the problem. They did not say exactly what they thought the problem was or how long they expected the repairs to take.
