CDC issues tips for treatment and prevention of the Stomach Flu

As we get into the flu season this year, it is worth noting that not all flu symptoms point to the same illness. The flu vaccine is designed to help prevent the influenza virus, however, your annual flu shot does nothing to prevent stomache flu.

The stomach flu, refered to by your doctor as gastroenteritis is caused by a virus known as the noroviruses about 50% of the time. Common symptoms of the stomach flu include vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping which is caused by inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

How is the stomach flu spread? While the norovirus is unrelated to the various flu vruses, it is still highly contageous and can be spread much like the seasonal flu. While the stomach flu can occurr at any time of the year, the majority of cases are reported during flu season from November to April.

The norovirus, and therefore stomach flu, is typically spread through contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces. Accodring to the CDC, some areas are greater risk to the spread of the stomach flu include long-term care facilities, restaurants, cruise ships, schools, and childcare facilities.

How to avoid catching the stomach flu. Wash your hands with soap and water, carefully wash fruits and vegetables, do not prepare food while sick, and clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces.

How to treat the stomach flu. While there is no specific treatment or vaccine for norovirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Provention recommends that infected people should drink plenty of liquids to replace fluid, nutrients, and minerals.
