Today NHL fans tune in for a classic event of outdoor winter ice hockey. In what has become a New Year’s Day tradition, today the Washington Capitals will host the Chicago Blackhawks outdoors on the open ice in the 2015 NHL Winter Classic.
The game airs at 1pm on NBC television, and also through the free online video stream, hockey fans can watch the winter classic online. The online coverage is via NBC Live Extra – a dedicated web portal on the NBC sports web site featuring live online video of a variety of sports.

Viewers can get free access to watch the 2015 Winter Classic online using the NBC sports web site, or by downloading the free app which allows hockey fans to watch the game on their smartphones, tablets, or laptop computers.
The tradition of playing at least one NHL game outdoors each season has been going strong since 2008. Last year, beginning with the Winter Classic, the league played a total of 6 games on the outdoor ice.
Last year the game was played in snowfall in Detroit. While there is no snow expected in Washington today, the game is expected to draw a great crowd.
The game is being played in the home baseball stadium for the Washington Nationals where an ice hockey rink has been created in the middle of the field.
