Watch Live Video: NASA Astronauts Perform 6 Hour SpaceWalk during Shuttle Altantis’ Final Mission

During this final mission for the Space Shuttle program, astronauts are currently making the 160th spacewalk as part of continued maintenance of the International Space Station (ISS). This walk is the 249th of a person outside of a space vehicle in NASA’s program history.

Known as Expedition 28, spacewalkers Mike Fossum and Ron Garan started the excursion outside of the space station, now docked with Shuttle Atlantis on its final mission. The live video of the 6+ hour space walk is being broadcast live on NASA TV, and we have the live internet streaming feed here.

During this spacewalk, astronauts will retrieve a pump module (PM) from an external stowage platform and store it in Atlantis’ cargo bay for return to Earth at the end of the shuttle mission. The pump module failed in 2010, shutting down half of the space station’s cooling system. Engineers hope that they will be able to determine the cause of the failure and plan to refurbish it for use as a spare.

For Fossum this makes for seven walks in space, and number four for Garan. The two astronauts have worked together like this before during STS-124 back in June of 2008.
