Watch NASA TV Live Video: NASA Launches Juno Mission to Jupiter Today

In less than an hour NASA will continue with another mission to explore our universe, and more specifically this time, our Solar System. The Juno mission to explore the largest planet in our solar system, the planet Jupiter, is set for launch this morning.

The launch window opens at 11:34 Eastern time today for the launch of the Juno spacecraft atop an Atlas V rocket from the Air Force Launch complex at the southern end of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

After the launch today, the over $1 Billion space craft will spend he next several years traversing the distance between the Earth and the Jovian system. Juno is scheduled to arrive at Jupiter in 2016. The spacecraft will capture vivid detailed images of Jupiter and its moons, and will also take the first pictures of the polar regions on Jupiter. Juno is scheduled to remain in a polar orbit around Jupiter for about a year skimming just a little over 3000 miles above the uppermost could layers of the planet.

Jupiter is a gas giant planet and is the largest planet in our solar system. The planet is so large that it could hold every other planet in our system within its volume with room to spare. The missions primary objectives are to help scientists determine whether their may be a solid core at the heart of Jupiter, and gain a better understanding of how this massive planet formed.
