Women’s FIFA World Cup Soccer - Team USA Opens against North Korea Today

As the 2011 FIFA World Cup Soccer games continue this week in Germany, the Women’s team representing the United States plays their opening game of the tournament against North Korea. The game is set to air at 11:45 AM eastern today on ESPN and ESPN.com, following the 8:45 AM match between Columbia and Sweden.

The US Women’s soccer team is something of an unknown going into the 2011 World Cup. They are ranked well, coming into the games as No.1, but not the favorite to win. The host team from Germany is the current favorite. If they could pull off a win here, it would be their first win at the World Cup since they won the tournament in 1999.

The Americans, which once dominated play only losing twice between 2005 and 2009, is coming off of a 3-1 loss against Norway in a scrimmage match last week. The team’s goalkeeper, Hope Solo, is playing hurt as she is still recovering from a shoulder surgery.

The team’s performance today should answer a lot of speculation about their potential to do well in the tournament. A strong showing against North Korea may give them the confidence boost that they need to get back on track.
